End of Year Report 2009 - Club Manager

The last couple of months have been very fruitful for the club with some outstanding team and individual results.

Individual Results.

National Junior Championships

Daniel Basterfield is the new Junior Champion of England

Daniel played some brilliant Table Tennis at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield this weekend. He showed some great skill along with a very powerful athletic display. Daniel had a difficult draw and played very positively and aggressively to move into the quarter finals and came across one of the hot favourites in Sean Cullen. Daniel played a great match to progress to the semi finals 3-2 to play Jared Patel who was a surprise semi finalist. Daniel ran out a easy winner to progress to the final, this was to be an outstanding performance to see off Richard Andrews 3-1 in the final and Daniel be crowned Champion.

Daniel and Richard also took a bronze in the doubles but were slightly disappointed not to get to the finals.

Tony Wilkinson and Laura Higham the club's only real couple, did fantastically well to progress to the semi final. They could not win the semi and had to settle for a bronze.

Igor Morais was the 3rd seed for the cadets and moved into the semi finals at a canter. In the semis Igor came across the talented and very professional Sam Walker. The match was great and Igor went down 3-2 and I hope as a coach he can learn from Sam as I feel the attitude of Sam will only lead him to great things in our game. Igor is so talented but has a problem controlling his emotions and this can lead to bad performances and will slow down his progression.

Igor and Ross Wilson combined to take a bronze in the doubles but this should and could have been more. Both players were a little down due to not reaching the finals of the singles and this gave the opposition an advantage.

Stockton 4 Star

A great tournament but a seriously long way away. The Stockton 4 Star is a great tournament as it has a team event and this provides a different kind of pressure for players and, if used correctly, can help with the development of players.

The Junior boys team was a very good event and Progress 2 with Tony Wilkinson and Ryan Maynard went out in the quarter finals 3-2 to Weald with Tony and Ryan beating Ping Ho and just went down in the doubles and with the hard working Lewis Grey at number one for Weald this meant they lost 3-2 but both players performed well.

Progress 1 swept aside all opposition including the Welsh team 3-0 and moved into a final. The final was a good tense match to watch against Weald. Daniel and William Morais played well but William let a 2-0 lead slip against Ping in the match at 2-1 and this meant the team went down 3-2 in the final as Lewis beat Daniel 3-1.

In the singles all the players played well with good focus and Igor was the main attraction in the cadets beating Sam Walker 3-2 in the match of the weekend, Igor played a outstanding match to come from 2-1 down to be crowned the champion of the stockton.

Daniel kept up his good form to progress to the final but he didn't have it all his own way, in the Q/final he played against the very talented Calum Main from Scotland, this match had every player in the hall watching, play stopped on all tables people were standing on chairs to get a view of the final set that saw Daniel squeeze through 17-15 in the fifth! He then beat Sam Walker in the semi final with some aggressive and strong power play, in the final the man of the weekend Lewis Grey playing at his very best came out a 3-1 winner.

Junior banded was the last event of the weekend and this proved to be when William came to form he blew away some internationals from Wales and from Scotland with some shots that would have all players running scared, if William can get it right he can be a top class player and he was the player that gave Lewis his biggest scare and should have won 3-1 but just missed out and ended up going down close in the fifth end to stop the boys Open being an all Progress final. In the banded final William lost 3-2 to Scott Barton in an epic final. I hope William moves forward and can learn from this performance.

Bristol GP & Batts Super League

Barry (Chen Po Huang) has won a couple of great events at the Bristol GP and the big prize money event at the super league in Harlow. Barry is a great role model to all players and works and plays hard, he also is always available to give advice and help the club's members. Barry is a vital member of our team and, as the club #1, is a vital part of our present and future. His table tennis is at times breath-taking and explosive.

Premier Division British League

Barry led the team to 3 wins out of 4 and we have a realistic chance of taking second place in the division. With a young talented team, still improving, it won't be long before we are sitting at the top of the pile again. The squad for the second weekend was Barry, Da Quin, Ashley Willetts and the gifted Garth Kinlocke at #4. The next day is at Progress at the end of January so your support is important and will help the team fight for more points.

Have a great holiday and see you ready and rested in the New Year ready for more action
